The official history of
Merano Canoeing begins in 1951 with the formation of the canoe section as an indipendent sport of the Merano Sports Club. In reality, however, a long time before the foundation of the club canoe rides were held on the
Passiria River. Rising in the Passiria Valley it joins the Adige River only in Merano, and it seems to have been created for canoeing.
Since the early fifties the Merano Sports Club has held international canoe races here every year. In 1953, 1971 and again in 1983 the
World Championships took place on the Passiria River.
One of this year's highlights will be the 53th International Canoe Slalom for which around 250 athletes from all over the world have already signed up.
Along with the races an interesting supporting programme will be offered: including the
Exo Gilf Rapid Race, which will be staged on Saturday evening, and the legendary
Kayak Party in the boat house compound. Here the race winners will be honoured.
