Between boulder-block and icefalls
The surrounding area of Merano is renowned in the climbing scene for their
boulder-spots that are accessible all year round. The most well known of these areas are placed in the villages of
Lagundo and
Scena. At the same time Merano and its surroundings offer numerous
icefalls with various difficulty levels. This enables a variety of climbing forms that can be combined in one day.
The largest amount of
waterfalls can be found in the
Val Senales valley and also in the back section of the
Val Passiria. The lengths of the routes differ between two and six pitches, and most falls can be climbed in just under a half an hour. There is a wide range of waterfall ice gradings that range between WI 3 and WI 6. Some routes are also mixed tours with ice gradings up to M5 suitable for beginners and also for the more experienced ice climbers. Safety is given through ice screws but there are also enough lowering occasions. The best time for ice climbing in the holiday region of
Merano and its surroundings is from December to March.
A special tip is the unique
waterfall just above the village
of Parcines nearby
Merano. With its mighty 295 feet (90m) this waterfall happens to be one of the highest in the Alps. It is a truly pleasurable WI 4 route. Another thing not to miss is the
artificial ice climbing tower in
Corvara in Val Passiria valley. The tower is big enough to offer space to more then ten ice climbers at the same time. Twice a week the night training takes place, with
floodlights and great classic rock playing in the background.
