Fascinating Ice Music and Ice Architecture
On the glacier in the high
alpine valley of Schnals/ Val Senales, visitors will have the unique opportunity to see musical instruments
carved and shaped from ice and listen to the special music they produce. An imposing "
cathedral" made of ice and snow will stand to one side of the glacier, and the American artist
Tim Linhart will play his very original icy music which his enthusiastic audiences never fail to appreciate.
Work at the
Ice Palace and its frozen, transparent musical instruments will go on to the end of January, and the
Ice Music Festival will be held from the end of Juanary to the beginning of April. Together with the well-known Sicilian cellist and composer
Giovanni Sollima, and Munich-based violin maker
Anita Stange-Mantovani, Tim Linhart plans to create a completely revolutionary new musical instrument on the Schnals Valley Glacier - a kind of gigantic cello. From 3th. February to 6th. April 2008, the "Ice Music Ensemble" will play their frozen instruments in the Ice Cathedral every Sunday at 11a.m and at 2p.m.
The artist
Tim Linhard was born in Kansas, USA in 1960 but now lives in the north of Sweden. He first started working with ice in 1984, while still in the USA, producing
mega-dimensional sculptures. Ice fascinates him not only because of its transparency and transient
nature but also because of the sound it produces. His first ice instrument was a
mega-dimensional Contrabass . He has, in fact, gone on to produce a whole series of ice musical instruments.
