Manifesta is the name of the
European Biennial of Contemporary Art. It is a series of interdisciplinary projects launched by the International Foundation Manifesta in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to investigate the practice and potential of
contemporary art in dialogue with social, geopolitical and broader cultural aspects.
The region of Trentino – Südtirol/Alto Adige have been selected by the International Foundation Manifesta (IFM) for its
industrial heritage as well as for its
cultural infrastructure and diversity. Here, southern lifestyle and alpine wellbeing found their unique way of living together. Indeed, the region might perfectly well be characterised, from a cultural point of view, as a small-scale ‘
Europe within Europe’.
The Manifesta 7 will be situated along a string of locations on Europe’s North-South transit route, linking the regions of the Austrian Tyrol to the Italian South Tyrol and Northern Italy. It is the first time that Manifesta takes place in a
Host Region instead of a Host City.
From the beginning, Manifesta was not intended to be an ordinary biennial exhibition. Instead, it was meant to provide a fairly
open structure, with the goal of creating a meaningful, long-term dialogue and building up links between European and international artists and audiences.
Now, the opening of Manifesta7 will coincide wither another important event for the region: the
opening of the new Museion Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art in Bozen/Bolzano. Not to be missed in this context is the art gallery kunst Meran in the old town of Merano, which is at the same time a forum for artistic discussions and proposals of contemporary art.
