A fascinating meeting of man and mountain
It is the mountains that give this place its character and so, in
five museums all over
South Tyrol, these mountains are the focus of attention.

PodCast - Reinhold MessnerSigmundskron Castle
A central part of the
Messner Mountain Museum, MMM for short, is the
Sigmundskron castle near Bolzano.
In the summer of 2006, after reconstruction work, a house was built, that because of its location is in keeping with the desire of the founder of the museum: to show the magic of the mountains, and indeed the visitor is enchanted from the very first moment by the
majestic landscape.
After the reconstruction of the museum building, a modern structure of steel and glass into environment harmoniously shows the
connection between nature, mountain and mankind. The museum expresses this special relationship in two distinct ways. The focus of the permanent exhibition is the History of Mountaineering, as well as the picture of the mountains in Art.

Situated
next to Naturns this branch office of the Messner Mountain Museum is dedicated to the myth of the mountains and its shapes in different cultures. The museum illustrates, for example, the holy mountains of
Tibet, Japan and Australia. In connection to the role of animism in this regard, there is a remarkable collection of masks that elucidates the religious dimension of life in the mountains in many cultures around the world.
The
mountain animal zoo completes the varied program and makes of Juval Castle an ideal destination for the whole family.

The central theme of the Dolomites museum, south of Cortina and more than 2000 meters high, focus on the
rock itself, and on the history of ice climbing.
The Ortles museum is situated in
Venosta Valley, near Sulden. The museum was built underground, therefore it evokes the feeling of being in a crevasse - the ideal location to emphasize the theme of this branch office:
the eternal ice.
The special location enables this museum to present its message in a deeply impressive way.

The fifth element of
Messner's Mountain Museum is still in the planning stage, but the draft is already complete: "Mountain people, profane world in the mountains”. In the course of this project direct contact between different cultures are to be established. From 2010 on people of different mountain regions will, each year, spend time in South Tyrol to make possible a direct exchange of experiences with the local population and visitors.
