Touriseum (Merano)

Tourism as event

Situated in the idyllic gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, the Museum of Tourism, called the Touriseum, stimulates the imagination of young and old alike.
The central component is the permanent exhibiton of lively scenes, displayed in 20 scenes, which invite you to experience an entertaining journey through 200 years of Alpine tourism history. In a delightful way, it combines humour with insight and entertainment with history.
You will find specal exhibits, the permanent collection, information in the tourism interviews in the reading room and something to make you smile in the „Jokes“ Turret. In the first floor of the castle building you will find a pleasant room with a large balcony, where you can relax and read. The reading room was at one time the living room of Austrian Emperor Franz Josef, and particularly of Empress Elisabeth when they used Trauttmansdorff Castle as their summer residence.
Trauttmansdorff Castle in the South West of Merano was in fact a favourite holiday residence of Empress Elisabeth. She chose to holiday in Trauttmansdorff Castle during the winters of 1870 and 1889 on account of its sunny wind sheltered location. She stayed in Meran on five occasions in all, as a result of which the small spa became very famous, and developed into an aristocratic resort.
The memory of Elisabeth’s visit is also kept alive in the town of Merano. On the Summer Promenade there is a statue depicting her, and the “Sisi Way” nowadays links Trauttmansdorff Castle with the historic centre of Merano. By the way Trauttmandorff Castle derives its name from the old aristocratic family of Trauttmansdorff who were the owners of the Castle, formerly called Neuberg.
