Relaxation and recreation on Merano’s high plateau

The high plateau of the Monzoccolo (Tschöggelberg) Ridge towers over the eastern side of the Merano Valley Basin. Here, instead of apple orchards and fruit cultivation, we find meadows and forests stretching across a high plateau dotted with mountain villages.

In summer, the Monzoccolo alpine pastures above Merano offer many hiking trails and mild temperatures. In winter, this hiker’s wonderland transforms into Meran 2000: this family ski area provides everything a skier's heart desires including first-class cuisine at five different ski huts and hassle-free access to the slopes - all just a few kilometres from the city below Merano 2000.

The Haflinger horse
The German name of Avelengo, Hafling, is widely known among horse lovers: the gentle Haflinger horse is native here and derives its name from that of the town.

Hiking
Numerous options for hiking and riding, a mild climate, and long sunny days make Avalengo an ideal vacation spot for families. Rest and relaxation also radiate from the neighbouring village of Verano, where meadows, fields of anemones, and the blue stems of gentians entice one and all to take a relaxing stroll in a pristine mountain world.
Popular destinations for hikers and bikers alike are alpine farms like Leadner Alm and Vöraner Alm, and the unique Stoanernen Mandlen at Auener Joch Pass.

The mountain cinema
The Knottnkino is also popular: this mountain top "cinema", an open-air artwork on Rotsteinkogel Mountain above Verano, has around 40 cinema seats that offer spectacular views of the Val d’Adige (Etschtal) Valley and the Tessa (Texel) Mountains as far as Penegal and Palla Bianca (Weißhorn) Mountains.
