In the land of the docile Haflinger horse

From spring to autumn, the racecourse offers competitive racing with professional jockeys. The highlight however, is the Merano Grand Prix, a steeplechase that takes place at the end of September.
Home of the Haflinger horse
Merano is situated beside the village of Avelengo, home of the renowned Haflinger horse. The worldwide popularity of this breed lies not only its appearance, with its unique golden chestnut colouring, long flowing white mane and tail, but also in its calm temperament. It is a breed of horse that loves people and is both willing and forgiving, a pleasant nature established over centuries of living and working alongside the mountains peasants. The history of the Haflinger horse can be traced back to medieval times when writings told of an oriental breed of horse found in the South Tyrol mountains. The first official documentation of the Haflinger horse in more recent years, was in 1874 when a foundation stallion was born from a half-Arab stallion crossed with a refined native Tyrolean mare.
