The Archeoparc in Val Senales Valley: a Neolithic adventure
Near the site of the sensational discovery of the oldest frozen mummy ever found, the 5,300-year-old Iceman called Ötzi after the Ötztal area, the Archeoparc Schnals Valley was built. In this unique interactive museum it is possible to relive the past and get a closer look at how Ötzi and his contemporaries lived in the Neolithic times. The Archeopark lies about half an hour’s drive from Merano and has a rich assortment of finds and exhibits – whether you prefer a scientific or a more practical approach, you will be satisfied, because the first interactive museum of South Tyrol offers an informative museum as well as an out door area with a large activity programme.
The museum
The museum concentrates on the Neolithic period and has excellent explanation boards, photographs, films and various other attractions. In the out door area visitors can experience what every-day life was like 5000 years ago: there are reconstructed huts, clothes, implements and tools, and demonstrations of labour and living conditions, of daily necessities and of how they built houses in the Neolithic civilization.
From just outside the museum there is also a good view of the place where Ötzi was discovered partially buried in ice on the Tisenjoch, also the Archeoparc presents a rich, varied programme of attractions and events, like cooking, making bread, musical instruments or cords and nets, dyeing wool or weaving.
Tip:
In order to celebrate the discovery of the glacier mummy Ötzi 20 years ago there will be held numerous activities in the archeoParc and the whole Val Senales valley such as guided ski tours and glacier tours to the findspot as well as different family activities.
