Stelvio National Park

Stelvio National Park, located in the western part of South Tyrol, is the largest nature reserve in Italy. The park covers a surface area of 130,700 hectares, stretching from the end of the Val d’Ultimo Valley across the whole of the Ortler-Cevedale Massif. The reserve is bordered on the north by Engadin National Park in Switzerland and to the south by Adamello Regional Park in Lombardy.

Flora and Fauna
The unspoiled flora and fauna of the national park is a refuge for rare plants and animals. The landscape is unique, especially at the icy heights where the hiker encounters crystal-clear glacial lakes and pristine, sparkling mountain streams time and time again. The villages in the rugged valleys have adapted well to the unique environmental conditions. Expertly trained National Park Guides are on hand to help visitors discover the mysteries of this land.

There are four National Park Visitor Centres in South Tyrol, located at four different villages inside the natural park. One of them, the former Lahner Säge mill, is located in Santa Geltrude (St. Gertraud) in the unspoiled Val d’Ultimo, a tributary valley in the municipality of Lana. The Lahner Säge Visitors Centre provides a wealth of information about the striking diversity of flora and fauna thriving in Stelvio National Park.
