By Train and Bicycle…

The new Venosta railway line, running from Merano to Malles in the upper Val Venosta 60 km away, is connected to an extensive bicycle-and-hiking-network. There is an outstanding cycling path that leads all the way from Malles to Merano, winding slowly downhill through fruit orchards and picturesque meadows, following the ancient Roman trade route of the Via Claudia Augusta.
Following in the steps of this ancient trade route provides ideal cultural and natural attractions for the bicycling enthusiast. Travelling by train and bicycle along this road through the Venosta Valley is simply the best and most environmentally friendly way to discover the beautiful landscape of Merano and Environs.

Facilities and Tools

It is possible to rent children’s safety seats for those youngest passengers who do not require a ticket. In addition, one can rent special tandems as well as other multipurpose tools (e.g. for dogs). In addition to this, it is possible to undertake a special liability agreement for unpredictable events, such as accidents or material damage, including wrecking service and change of material, for a fee of only 2.50 €.

Where to Begin:
The EventCard consists of a full-day train ticket for the railway line Merano-Malles-Bolzano and a bicycle rental including crash helmet. The EventCard is available at any bicycle rental office along the railway route, at all ticket machines and at the Tourist Information centers in Venosta Valley, as well as all points of sale along the Valley that are marked with the logo of the local public transportation system.

Bicycle Rental Service
All six railway stations on the line Merano - Malles are furnished with bicycle rental services: in Merano at the goods station areal (Güterbahnhof), in Naturno, Laces, Spondigna, Silandro and Malles. Moreover, bicycal rental services are also offered by the Messebahnhof in Bolzano Sud and at Lake Resia. The bicycles can be rented and also returned at any of the many rental services along the way, no matter at which service point it was originally rented.

Children: for children up to 6 years of age, the railway trip is free, and the fee for a children’s bicycle is € 5. The extra charge for the bicycle carriage on the railway amounts to 4 € per trip.
